Louise Bourgeois(Maman)

Louise Bourgeois was a sculptor and visual artist who explored themes such as memory, sex, and trauma in her work.

'Maman' was created by Louise in 1999 at Tate Modern in London, and is made of bronze, stainless steel, and marble. The sculpture depicts a spider measuring 927 x 891 x1024cm, with its abdomen and chest made of matte bronze, including a pouch containing 32 marble eggs.

In fact, 'Maman' is related to the artist's own mother, and is a tribute to her, revealing the autobiographical nature of the work. In an interview about her work, Louise once said: "The spider is a friendly creature that eats mosquitoes, which spread diseases, but it has a protective role. Its silk can weave layers of protective clothing. My mother was like a spider - intelligent, patient, clean, useful, reasonable, and important."

The monumental size of the work can show the importance of the theme to Louise, just like how some characters were depicted disproportionately in the Middle Ages to symbolize power. In this sculpture, one can find metaphors of spinning, weaving, and protection. When observing the area below the abdomen, the maternal theme also emerges: a pocket with a fence, containing marble eggs. The spider protects its precious eggs with its body; The materials used and the color black symbolize insecurity and threat, while the huge height and slender legs are incredibly able to bear pressure and maintain balance, evoking awe, fear, and even a hint of heartbreaking vulnerability. This experience made me realize that I can abstractly convey my experiences and emotions through my work, and that I can create exaggerated or intriguing designs to emphasize the importance in the future. In terms of material use, I can refer to the combination of different textures and contrasting materials.
